Medallion Foundations Safety Management System Program (SMS)
We started developing the Medallion Foundation SMS Implementation Program™ in 2008. It was designed in accordance with ICAO and FAA SMS regulatory guidance.
The Medallion Foundation’s Safety Management System (SMS) Program is designed in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and FAA SMS guidance and will meet the requirements of regulators worldwide and the expectations of safety minded customers. Our SMS program was built by conducting a gap analysis between the Medallion Foundation’s Five Star/Shield Program™ and the FAA’s SMS guidance as described in AC 120-92 and FAA regulation 14 CFR Part 5. We then enhanced our existing Five Star program to mirror an SMS.
By working with the Medallion Foundation an Operator can achieve an SMS and become a Medallion Foundation Shield Carrier with the same level of effort. An Operator can also utilize our SMS services independent of our Five Star/Shield Program™.
There are many third party providers that can help you build an SMS, however the Medallion Foundation has decades of aviation operating experience, works closely with FAA regulators and FAA SMS points of contact, and have continuous interaction with industry peers, all of which will make the implementation of an SMS at your organization practical and efficient. Additionally, we have developed user friendly checklists designed to ensure that all of the components listed on the FAA Detailed Gap Analysis, ICAO SMS standards, and pending FAA SMS regulations are satisfactorily met. Our online resource center is complete with the most current regulatory guidance and industry information available. Once Part 135 SMS regulations are finalized we can work with your organization to compile, format, and present the evidence of compliance required by the FAA if applicable. Even after an Operator has a fully functional SMS via our program our mentoring services will be available. FAA InFO #11010 recognizes the Medallion Foundation as having an SMS program that meets the ICAO SMS standards. Click on the link below to view FAA InFO #11010.

Implementing our program will also ensure that Operators will develop an SMS in accordance with Oil and Gas, Aviation, Tourism, and Mining and Exploration industry safety standards and regulations. Our voluntary SMS Implementation Program is scalable and will meet the needs of any Operator regardless of type or size. The four phased Medallion Foundation SMS Implementation Program is an alternative to the FAA’s SMS Implementation Pilot Project and includes the following materials:
