New Supporting Members!

Alaska State Chamber of Commerce

Aviation Resource Enterprises, LLC

How to become a Supporting Member:

Dear Supporting Member,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our organization, The Medallion Foundation and ask for your participation as a Supporting Member of our organization.

The Medallion Foundation is a non-profit organization (501 (c)(3)) with a mission of promoting aviation safety in Alaska . The Medallion Five Star Program is a compliance plus program as many of our requirements are higher than those of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Currently seventy-nine air carriers in Alaska have applied to participate in this unique voluntary program; thus far thirty-one air carriers have been awarded stars for their achievement; and three are at the Shield level. To obtain a star the carrier must adhere to a specific program and/or philosophy and be audited to a published standard. After earning all five of the stars, the applicant must undergo yet another audit to see if the programs have truly resulted in a proactive Safety Management System for that operator. This Five Star Program is currently offered at no cost to the applicant other than the time and resources required to implement the various programs.

As you make travel arrangements for your employees, family, or friends, The Medallion Foundation would encourage you to book that travel with participating air carriers who are working toward achieving these higher safety standards. For further information on the air carriers in your region please check our website at www.medallionfoundation.org.

If you support what the Foundation is attempting to accomplish, we would invite you to become a Supporting Member of The Medallion Foundation. We are only asking that you support the philosophies that are put forth on our web site and nothing more. If you do decide to support our safety effort, we ask that you provide a letter of support in recognition of the higher standards being required by the Medallion Foundation. We will recognize you as a supporter of the program on our web site and would appreciate your permission to use your logo.

There is no cost to you as a supporting member and you can withdraw your support at any time and for any or no reason. We will be providing you with updates on the progress of the program and will entertain any suggestions from supporting members. We are also seeking to recognize Supporting Members in other ways where they and the actively participating carriers can be singled out for their efforts to improve the aviation safety culture in Alaska .

Please contact me at 907-222-3210 or 907-229-2062 (cell) for more information. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

Regards,

Marina Carey Jarvis

More Aviation News!

Aviation Today has a new look to their website...Check It Out!! www.aviationtoday.com/.

The NTSB issued Safety Recommendation A-06-66-69 on November 8, 2006. Below is a summary of the text:

"The National Transportation Safety Board recommends that the Federal Aviation Administration:

Disseminate to all principal inspectors of 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 certificate holders and to all Part 135 certificate holders guidance that includes specific procedures, such as those contained in the draft revisions to Operations Specifications A-008, that detail appropriate methods by which a certificate holder can demonstrate to the Federal Aviation Administration that it is maintaining adequate operational control over all on-demand charter flights conducted under the authority of its certificate. This guidance should address operations based at locations geographically distant from the certificate holder's base, should be included in all Part 135 certificate holders? operations specifications, and should be required as periodic inspection items for principal inspectors. (A-06-66)

Review all charter management, lease, and other agreements between 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 certificate holders and other entities to identify those agreements that permit and/or enable a loss of operational control by the certificate holder and require revisions of any such arrangements. (A-06-67)

Require all 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 certificate holders to ensure that seatbelts at all seat positions are visible and accessible to passengers before each flight. (A-06-68)

Require that any cabin personnel on board 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 flights who could be perceived by passengers as equivalent to a qualified flight attendant receive basic FAA-approved safety training in at least the following areas: preflight briefing and safety checks; emergency exit operation; and emergency equipment usage. This training should be documented and recorded by the Part 135 certificate holder. (A-06-69)"

More Great Aviation News!

Weather Gathering Service Expands:

Next time you get bounced into the headliner on a short-haul flight you can take some comfort that you might be helping other aircraft avoid that weather. After an initial trial of Tropospheric Airborne Meteorological Data Reporting (TAMDAR) with Mesaba Airlines, AirDat LLC has attached weather sensors to aircraft toiling for regional carriers in all areas of the continental U.S., providing real-time, real-world meteorological data through satellite transmissions. AirDat CEO Jay Ladd said in a news release that the rich stream of data from airliners-turned-weather-stations is improving forecasting accuracy and allowing the airlines to adjust routing and scheduling on the fly to minimize weather delays.

By next year, more than 400 aircraft working in every corner of the country will have the sensors attached. The sensors send data to AirDat headquarters via Iridium satellites. Built-in GPSs provide position and altitude simultaneously. Ladd says the regional airliners make the perfect platform. "They make shorter, more frequent trips and operate at altitudes below 30,000 feet, filling in an important gap in weather observations," said Ladd. "Their frequent ascents and descents provide a high frequency of soundings from diverse geographic locations.
